I loved the movie Despicable Me 2! As we were walking out of the movie theater, my daughter decided that she wanted to go as the evil purple minion for Halloween this year. The costume turned out pretty good and was simple to construct. I made a pencil sketch to figure out how the end result should appear. A list of possible items to use and which ones I needed to buy. All the purchases for this project were made at our local dollar store.
Raw Materials:
Empty Cardboard box (I used large Kirkland diaper box)
Purple plastic tablecloth
Styrofoam bowls
Plastic lid
Silver duct tape
Black craft paper
Scotch tape
3-4 purple gauze tutus

Open up the box and roll into a tube to fit the subject. Mark the place where his/her eyes are. Cut out a rectangle so they can see. This is going to be the minion's mouth. Cover the box with the tablecloth and stick using the scotch tape. This is how it looked after covering with the purple table cloth. I made an "X" shaped cut over the mouth and folded the table cloth inside and taped it. Using the styrofoam plate, cut triangles for the upper jaw teeth. I used styrofoam bowls for the lower teeth. Cut a piece of cardboard in a rectangle with the width size corresponding to the mouth opening. Cut one side in a semicircle to represent the protruding lower jaw. Cover the cardboard in purple tablecloth and tape it to the mouth. You can fold the straight side to tape it to the inner side of the cylinder. Tape the teeth cut from the bowls to the underside of the jaw. The picture gives a better idea than the mumbo-jumbo I just wrote :).
For the wild hair, there are various options - frizzy yarn, stiff gauze etc. I found small purple tutus in the dollar store and used 4 of them taped to the upper edge of the cylinder to make the wild hair.
Cover the lid in silver duct tape and stick a small circle of white paper to make the eye. You can draw the pupil with a black marker. Cut a strip of black paper to make the strap for the goggles and stick to the purple tube as shown in the picture.
I cut small semicircle in the side for the shoulders to fit in before cutting out the mouth for a better fit.
Complete the outfit by wearing a purple T-shirt and black overalls. (My daughter didn't own overalls so I just cut a square out of black fabric and stapled to cut out fabric straps that went over her shoulders and through the belt loops of her black pants and tied a knot. The front was tucked in).
Voila! A homemade evil minion costume ready using very little $$.
